Menopause Hormones Increase Risk of Lung Cancer

Posted on May 30, 2009 under Menopause | No Comment

Wyeth’s hormone replacement therapy, a menopause treatment whose use has declined after being linked to heart attack, stroke and breast cancer, increases the risk of death from lung tumors, a study found.

After five years on Wyeth’s Prempro, a combination of the hormones estrogen and progestin, 67 women died from non-small cell lung cancer, compared with 39 on placebo, the research showed. Results of the trial, which examined women age 50 to 79 and included current and former smokers, were presented today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Orlando.

All i can say is don’t mess with mother nature..

You wonder where the motive is..

As
many as 6 million women took the menopause treatments before the
study curbed use. The products generated $1.1 billion last year,
down from more than $2 billion in 2001.
DAMN… that is a chunk of change..

Nerve pain pill treats hot flashes

Posted on May 21, 2009 under Hot Flashes | No Comment

They have found that pregabalin decreased hot flash severity and frequency about 20% more than did a placebo.

Pregabalin has been found to offer about the same benefit as gabapentin, an older, related drug, as well as newer classes of antidepressants.

“Hot flashes are a major problem in many women, and for those who opt not to take hormonal therapies or antidepressants, pregabalin appears to be another treatment option,” said the study’s lead author, Charles Loprinzi, MD, a medical oncologist at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome when using Pregabalin:

Blurred vision; changes in sexual function; constipation; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; gas; headache; lightheadedness; stomach pain; trouble concentrating; weight gain.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Pregabalin:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloating or swelling of the hands, feet, or ankles; changes in vision; confusion; fast or irregular heartbeat; fever; inability to control urination; loss of coordination; mental or mood changes; muscle aches, pain, tenderness, or weakness (especially if this occurs with a fever or general feeling or discomfort); speaking problems; sudden, unexplained weight gain; suicidal thoughts or actions; unusual tiredness or weakness.

Relieve Vaginal Dryness

Posted on May 20, 2009 under Menopause | No Comment

I’m not surprised by a new survey showing that the majority of women over 50 who experience vaginal dryness don’t feel comfortable talking to their doctors about it. The survey, sponsored by hormone therapy manufacturer Novo Nordisk, finds that 40 percent of post-menopausal women experience dryness and pain but that 7 out of 10 aren’t seeking any advice from a gynecologist or family physician.

The truth is, I’ve had vaginal dryness, too, after the birth of my first baby, and I didn’t think of broaching the topic at my postnatal exam. I don’t remember being told that this was a common side effect of plummeting estrogen levels after pregnancy. Though it makes perfect sense—nature’s way of saying let’s hold off on getting pregnant again, at least until your body no longer needs to produce all that milk.

Clinic for Women with Menopause Symptoms Who Are at Risk for Heart Disease

Posted on May 20, 2009 under Menopause | No Comment

Women who are at risk for heart disease and who are also experiencing menopause symptoms now have an added resource – a highly specialized clinic in the Division of Cardiology at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. The Advanced Preventive Women’s Clinic at the Women’s Heart Center recently opened and is offering comprehensive cardiac risk assessments designed specifically for women who are in menopause. The clinic also offers menopausal patients state-of-the-art screenings, as well as personalized medicine therapies and counseling, including high-risk hormone counseling.

“This clinic is designed for women who are at higher risk for heart disease and who are seeking to treat their menopause symptoms while simultaneously taking steps to prevent heart problems,” said Chrisandra Shufelt, M.D., assistant director of the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Heart Center. “Menopause is a time to assess your heart health so that the next chapter of your life can be as productive as your youth.”

How to stay young after menopause

Posted on May 18, 2009 under Menopause | No Comment

In Chinese Culture, a woman’s midlife transition is known as her Second Spring.

That’s also the title of a new book — “Second Spring: Hundreds of Natural Secrets for Women to Revitalize and Regenerate at Any Age” (Free Press, $17.99). It’s authored by Dr. Maoshing Ni, a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine who co-founded the Tao of Wellness Chinese Medicine Center in southern California.

His clients include Sheryl Crow, Debbie Allen and Arianna Huffington. Ni’s book lists natural Chinese remedies that purportedly can increase a woman’s sexual energy and vitality, control appetite, reduce wrinkles and spots, and improve memory. The reader will find familiar advice: Avoid refined carbohydrates like white bread and pasta, and take ginseng, which is high in antioxidants. But readers also will learn that eating Asian, or Fuji, pears can help alleviate dark circles around the eyes.

Other advice:

• Take cinnamon, as a spice or tea, to control blood sugar.

• Don’t drink fluids with meals. They dilute the gastric juices that digest our food. Drink fluids in between meals.

• Chinese Moss fights memory loss. It boosts brain chemicals that have been linked to memory and awareness.

• Not all fats are bad. Flaxseed, walnuts, cold-water fish, almonds, sesame and olive oils contain essential fatty acids. They can help combat bone loss and cognitive decline.

• Broccoli, eggs and black beans are some of the foods that contain choline, a nutrient that aids the neurotransmitters in the brain. Our bodies produce choline in the liver but produce less as we age.

• Green tea might ward off Alzheimer’s and other forms of mental degeneration, because it contains antioxidants called polyphenols.

• Don’t eat just before you go to bed. You won’t feel rested, because your body will be digesting food while you sleep.

• True to its name, horny goat weed can spice up your love live.

• Leafy greens have calcium that can increase vitality.

• Get a deeper, more healthful sleep by spraying lavender, vanilla or green apple on your pillow.
